Three people have been taken to hospital after a racehorse panicked and backed into a fence, bringing it down on the crowd at a race meeting in central western NSW.
Local trainer Brian Buckley, who witnessed the incident at Towac Park Racecourse in Orange, said the horse was being led around the enclosure known on Saturday afternoon when the incident occurred.
“The horse was being led around the enclosure and it backed back and knocked a panel of fencing down … where there were a lot of the public standing,” Mr Buckley said.
“The horse panicked … it just pushed the fence over and the people couldn’t get away.
“It was very traumatic for a few people.”
An ambulance spokesman said paramedics attended the racetrack at 15.45pm (AEDT).
An elderly man was taken to Orange Base Hospital suffering cardiac chest pain and a 50-year-old woman was being treated there for a fractured ankle.
A 20-year-old woman also suffered a leg injury.
